First, I didn't have my camera on Election Day + Night. Then on Inauguration Day, I caught the flu. I only managed to snap a few photos on Pennsylvania Avenue before getting quite ill and going home, where I was parked on my couch for almost three days straight. I really wish I was able to shoot more last Tuesday. But you know what they say. Best laid plans, etc. etc.

For several other reasons I'd rather not get into, January 2009 has been a beast of a month. So I'll just concentrate on the things that provide occasional bursts of pleasure during these drab, dreary days of winter and look forward to February, which brings us one step closer to the warmer, longer, sun-drenched, iced coffee, cherry blossom filled days of spring.

+Portraiture Now: Feature Photography, an exhibition of portraits by Katy Grannan, Jocelyn Lee, Ryan McGinley, Steve Pyke, Martin Schoeller and Alec Soth (!) is up at the National Portrait Gallery. Honestly, it was a bit of an uneven show for me but I loved seeing Alec Soth's work up close and on a wall for the first time. I've only seen his work in books, magazines and online, and seeing his prints in person...wow. Oh yeah, and Schoeller's portrait of some guy named Barack Obama is up too, in case you missed out on the Richard Avedon exhibit at the Corcoran.
